#34 Poster for Mind Fashion Show, March 1992

In 1992 this day-glow orange poster was created to publicise a fashion show organised by the Milton Keynes branch of the charity Mind. Mind was founded in 1946, and serves to lobby local and national authorities on behalf of people with mental health issues, as well as providing support and advice that same community.

All that we know about the fashion show comes from this single A4 poster, which came to us as part of the Milton Keynes Development Corporation collection. Organised by Mind, the names of the entertainment acts includes the Mind Dancers.  This suggests the active involvement of people with mental health issues – this was not simply a fund-raiser on their behalf.

The poster is also evidence that a national charity such as Mind, had by 1992, only twenty-five years after the foundation of the new town, chosen to base a branch in Milton Keynes.

Today Mind in Milton Keynes is part of the wider division with Bedfordshire and Luton. Their activities are based at the Central Wellbeing Centre: Margaret Powell House, on Midsummer Avenue, a venue for counselling, mentoring and courses.

If you were at the event in March 1992, or was involved with Mind at this time, please share your memories with us.
